German singer and songwriter Bibi Bourelly recently debuted her first project, an EP titled Free the Real (Pt. 1). Even though you may not recognize her name, you certainly know her work. The 21 year old had a hand in one of Rihanna’s most recent hits, “Bitch Better Have My Money” and also wrote “Higher” off the ANTI album.
This 5 track EP basically sums up her sound: unapologetically original. Her powerful voice is filled with a passion and soulfulness that allow her songs to touch the listener instantly; a true gift. She is not bound by a specific sound or genre while still managing to create tracks that cohesively exist on this project. Only 2 of the songs are new releases. “Sally”, “Ego” and “Riot” were all previously released as singles and have been in circulation for a while now.
“Guitar”, which is a new track, features a dope guitar solo from Bourelly’s father Jean-Paul Bourelly who is a notable guitarist. Considering that she has been writing songs since the age of four, it may be safe to assume that her father’s involvement in the music industry may have produced a musical prodigy. The organic honesty conveyed by her lyrics is surely a result of years of experience paired with pure talent. It appears as though this track depicts her childhood and relationship with her father.
Her confidence in herself and her originally is splashed all over this project. Multiple lines unapologetically scream “freedom” and “liberation”. Bourelly’s stance on life is so apparently one based on being one’s self. Each track has one universal theme; she is who is and will be who she will be. The extreme self-assurance and strength portrayed by Bibi is uplifting and will surely play a part in helping her connect with fans. It’s something about an artist who can translate this level of power and emotion into lyrics that inevitably draws fans to them.
Her debut album is set to be released later this year. With such a huge writing credit under her belt, it will be interesting to see what the singer/songwriter creates for herself. Be on the look out for more from Bibi Bourelly.
