7 Areas To Keep In Mind When Upgrading Your Home Exterior

At some point, every homeowner will find that their house is in need of an overhaul. Whether you are looking to sell your home or simply want to improve its appearance, there are many ways to update the outside look of your house.

Most people think they have to rip out their old siding or renovate their roof completely, but this isn’t always true. Sometimes, it is possible to only focus on cosmetic improvements and still see a huge difference with just a few new additions.

If you are considering updating the exterior of your house,

Here Are 7 Areas To Keep In Mind When Upgrading Your Home Exterior:

Outdoor Lighting

Once you enter fall, consider leaving the outdoor lights on. It is not uncommon for potential home-buyers to look at homes after dark, and you don’t want them missing your house because they can’t see it! Don’t forget to check that all your light bulbs are in working order before showing off your home.

Sidewalks

If you live in a neighborhood or community with sidewalks (front walkways), make sure they are free of cracks and major damage. You may also want to power wash them before putting the house on the market. Once you have repaired any major issues, keep an eye out for any weeds growing up through these pathways; this will show that you didn’t care enough about them to look after them properly.

Decorative Columns

Most people don’t know this, but you can purchase columns that match your home’s exterior siding perfectly. If you have a Victorian-style home with ornate details, consider purchasing an Italian-style column to really show off your style. These columns are available in many colors and sizes, so do some research online now so you know what might look best with your house.

Storage Areas

Utilizing small spaces on the outside of your house is key for adding extra storage space without having to renovate the inside of your home (and increasing its value). Consider building a shed, placing an outdoor garbage can near the front door (but not blocking it, or constructing shelving units for storage. Remember, the goal is functionality)

Roof

Depending on the age of your roof, it may be time for a replacement. When purchasing, look into modern materials that are either fireproof or won’t catch fire due to sparks from other materials. Better yet, contact a metal roofing contractor and let them do all the heavy lifting.

Exterior Paint

This may seem like a no-brainer, but many people forget about updating their home’s exterior paint colors until it is too late. If your home has never been painted before, consider doing so now. It doesn’t have to cost much. There are affordable paints out there that can easily give your home’s exterior a facelift.

Curb Appeal

Curb appeal is extremely important when selling a house. Even if you aren’t selling the house, this area should be kept tidy and looking nice! You don’t want to spend money on upgrading your home externally only to see the potential buyer drive by and think that no one pays attention to this part of the yard (and therefore won’t maintain the property).
