Outsourcing can be a great way to save time, money, and resources within your company, but many businesses end up missing out on these opportunities because they do not put enough thought into outsourcing and whether it is right for them in each circumstance.

Define your goals

Before you outsource, define your goals as specifically as you can. If you know what outcome you would like from the experience, it will be easier to find the right freelancer and give them the optimal instructions to ensure a job well done and time and money well saved.

Ask yourself if it is necessary

Outsourcing might seem like a good idea, but it is not always necessary. In order for outsourcing to be worth your while it needs to save you money or time or enable you to access skills that you do not already have within your team. If it cannot offer you any one of those three things, then it probably isn’t worth your while.

Find the right model

Many people think of outsourcing in terms of hiring a sing freelancer for a single project, but of course, there is more to it than that. There are contractors and managed services and staff leasing to think about too. 

Research every model of outsourcing available to you and identify the model that will bring you the most benefits at the best cost, and take it from there.

Do your due diligence

It should go without saying that you should never outsource a project without first checking out the people you are handing it over to. Whether you are looking for great IT support, a creative graphic designer, or someone to handle your accounts, you need to check out reviews and testimonials, and where possible have a conversation with them first.

Draw up a contract

You should also think seriously about drawing up a contract before you hand over s project to a third-party. This should lay out what you want them to do, the time frame you want it to be completed in, payment terms, and anything else of importance. Having the freelancer sign a non-disclosure agreement is also a good idea if you want to protect your business and your own working practices.

Brief your team

Your team should be briefed every step of the way, especially if they will be working alongside your outsourced team or if their work dovetails with the work of outside contractors. If you can get them to meet on Teams, this will really help with cohesion between the two, as will using apps like Slack to share and manage projects.

Outsourcing can work out well when it is a well-thought-out strategy, so before you go ahead and offer that contract, ensure you have done all of the above first.
