The name “DJ Khaled” has become synonomous with colossal anthems and collaborations. His newest track “Holy Key” is no exception and definitely deserves a “Special Cloth” alert. Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean and legend Betty Wright join the mega producer for a pretty powerful anthem. We can add this banger to the growing list of songs from artist who have opted to use their platforms to speak on the exigent circumstances Blacks in America continue to face.
Big Sean steps up to the plate first and knocks it out of the park with his signature fluctuating flow and witty bars. Up next is “The Clean Up Woman” herself. Betty Wright brings a soul-rich feeling to the track with her powerful voice and even more vigorous lyrics. As the face paced beat runs, Ms. Wright’s sultry voice bellows “…the driver couldn’t break me now it’s all mine. Surrounded by my angels and we all shine…”. It’s basically impossible for listeners not to feel her voice deep within. Kendrick then takes it home with his verse. Khaled, being the musical genius that he is, had to know people would ask “Where’s Kendrick?” had he not included K.dot considering the song’s message. Of course, Lamar brings those unapologetic truths we’ve come to love him for.
Khaled is the king of branding and it’s becoming apparent that there was a bigger picture to all of the “major keys” given on the Miami natives Snapchat. His upcoming album is slated to be released July 29th and will be titled “Major Key”. Check out “Holy Key” on iTunes.
