Ways To Help You Relax After Work

Every job can present stressful situations. Situations that can increase your anxiety levels or leave you feeling stressed and unhappy after a long day at work. To an extent, these situations, may at times, be inevitable and unavoidable. What can make all the difference however is how you deal with these situations after you have left the office. If you have the tools to help you relax and unwind after a stressful day, it can make all the difference to your wellbeing. Watch your working hours

First and foremost, this one is especially important. Particularly for all of those still working at home. It can be all too easy to carry on working past your scheduled hours and there may be times when it is unavoidable, but it certainly should not be all of the time. Especially if you work from home. 

Although it is tempting to carry on working when you are busy to try and make things easier on yourself it is important to remember that everybody needs to take the time to switch off and recharge so that you can come back feeling revitalized the next day. What is more, if you carry on working without taking sufficient downtime or breaks the quality of your work will inevitably dip and you could see yourself making errors, such as a bad trade or poor decision. So, it is incumbent upon you to be strict with yourself and watch your working hours. When you have finished for the day, walk away from work. Avoid the temptation to answer and email or go over the to-do list. Taking some time where you are completely removed from work is essential. 

Spend time outdoors

Again, this is important if you spend your working days cooped up inside. Getting outside for some fresh air and gentle exercise is vital for your physical and mental wellbeing. Research has long proved a link between being outside in nature and the feel-good effect it has on your mental health. Make the effort to walk to the local park or devise a simple route that ensures you get out and stretch your legs after a day bent over the desk. Alternatively, why not give gardening a go. Being outside and moving about It is good for your body, posture, and health, and can help you unwind and relax. 


The importance of exercise has long been understood. It is well known that exercise has fantastic benefits for your physical health, but it is also incredibly beneficial for your mental health. Ultimately, it does not matter what exercise you do, it is ensuring you do it that is important. If you find yourself struggling with motivation, then why not buddy up with a colleague or friend. Having someone to hold you accountable can be a great way to ensure you both get it done and walk away from your workout having forgotten about the stress of the working day.

Call on your commute

Use your commute home to take your mind off the day and calling a friend is a great way to do that. There is nothing better than catching up with a friend and having a good old natter. Be sure to call someone who leaves you feeling uplifted to help you move on from the day. 

Better yet, make plans to try and meet up with friends after work for a little socializing. Socializing is proven to help shift your mindset from stressed to relaxed and calm. Socializing can give the chemicals in your brain a little kickstart and leave you feeling good. It is a great recipe to help unwind from the day and leave it where it should be, at work. 

Have a warm bath 

Spending your day tense or cowered over in an uncomfortable position will leave your body and mind feeling uptight and tense. A warm bath can help to wash away that tension and help calm both your physical and mental state. Add some Epsom salts or essential oils to your tub to promote that relaxing state of mind and loosen up those tight and tense muscles. To really set a calming atmosphere include some low-level lighting and ensure your room is quiet and you remain undisturbed for the duration of your soak. 

Talk it out 

If you have had a particularly bad day or stressful time, then ignoring it and switching off completely may not be the best course of action. Sometimes the best and healthiest thing you can do is enlist some support and talk your stresses out. To do this it helps to have a supportive person that you can turn to. How you seek to support will be specific to you. It might be that you need someone who will listen to you and offer your guidance on how best to manage a situation, or it might be that you need someone who can help you gain some perspective and refocus your energy before you start getting overwhelmed with work. 

It might be that the support you need runs a little deeper than talking things through with a friend or relative. If work is starting to get the better of you and you are finding it increasingly difficult to switch off and de-stress, then you might want to consider seeking professional help. Talking to a doctor or trained professional can help you uncover ways in which you can manage your work-related anxieties. They may also be able to provide you with some tools or techniques to better manage your stress going forward. 

Write a to-do list

If you find yourself unable to stop thinking about work or all of the things, you need to get done it will prevent you from unwinding and walking away from the working day. To help put your mind at ease dedicate five minutes of your evening to writing a to-do list or journaling your thoughts. Getting all of your work-related thoughts out of your system and onto paper can help give you the mental clarity and headspace you need. What is more, it can set you up for the next working day. 

Read a book or listen to an audiobook

Literature, whether read or listened to, is a wonderful way to escape from reality for a period of time. Not only will it entertain you, but you can also allow yourself to get lost in the lives of others and in turn help you to de-stress and forget about your work-related tension. What is more, reading is proven to have other benefits just as improving your memory and attention span.

Have five minutes of alone time

After a day at work, you may be gagging to get home to the family or loved ones and spend some quality time with them. Most people are. However, it can be hugely beneficial to allow yourself just five minutes of solitude to decamp and decompress from the day before walking into a busy household. There is absolutely nothing wrong with needing some alone time. Your children or loved ones will thank you for it if it means you come home slightly more refreshed for having fine minutes of peace. 


That said, once at home why not have some fun. Unleash your inner child and get down and play with your children. If you don’t have children then treat yourself to screen time on your games console or VR set for online gaming. However, you choose to play, make time for it, embrace it, and enjoy it. 

Focus on your sleep
