Girlfriends of Culture: How to Explore Your Signature Look

By: Sophia Smith

We all want to be unique in some way. It’s not just about getting noticed, it’s about our individuality and the fear of getting lost in the sea of people who are all trying to follow the same trend, in exactly the same way. It’s about getting the opportunity to showcase our real personality and tell the world all about who we are through our clothing, makeup, and attitude. But how do we do that? How do we represent ourselves through fashion and find a style that’s uniquely ours and no one else’s?

Building your own signature takes time, but it’s ultimately very doable. All you really need is to know what the right steps are.

Always pick the right fit

Above all else, you really need to learn how to work with your body instead of against it. Work with your shape and pick clothes that enhance all your best features and make you feel proud to wear them. It’s not a bad idea to invest in a tailor so they could create several garments that fit you like a glove, and never buy things that are even slightly “off.” If it tugs or feels too loose somewhere, pass it up, you don’t need it.

Utilize your social media

Take a look at Instagram, take a look at Pinterest, and even check out YouTube and good old fashion magazines. What kind of clothing looks cute? Save pictures of things that inspire you and examine them to see if there’s a pattern – perhaps you’re drawn to darker clothes, or you really seem to enjoy dresses, or maybe you like a bit of a retro vibe. Explore and look at people who you think are really good at fashion, then use them as a starting point. After that, you can add personal touches and slowly start relying on your own taste and instincts more.

Minimalism and practicality

Millennials are all about minimalism mostly because we live in a very fast-paced world and no one’s got a couple of hours each morning just to put together a complicated outfit. However, practical clothing doesn’t mean it needs to be boring – it’s much more about versatility and relying on things that you know will look good on you and can easily be matched with other pieces. We recommend simply browsing the internet and finding pieces that are simple, elegant, and effective. From well-cut blazers that can make any outfit look polished, to sleek cigarette pants, flowy maxi skirts, silk button-down blouses, cardigans, smart-looking Oxford shoes, pencil skirts, simple white tees – all of this works and can be incorporated into any wardrobe. There’s so much beautiful women’s clothing online that you don’t even have to leave your house to find something gorgeous.

A little black dress might look pretty average on its own, but depending on what you pair it with, it can be a stunning little piece that will grab the attention of the room. So, it’s not about complicated cuts and patterns, it’s about a versatile base and clever details that will take your outfit to the next level.

Know your color scheme

Do you prefer cool tones or warm tones? Go to a store and try out a simple t-shirt in as many colors as you can find. Which ones look the best on you? Knowing your color scheme will save you a ton of time when browsing clothing, and it will be another thing to help your wardrobe look more cohesive.

Don’t give into sales

Sales are a huge trap for the unprepared. While they are seemingly a great way to save a few bucks, they often end up with you stocking up on a bunch of things that you don’t need just because they were 50% off and you didn’t want to pass up on a deal. When going on a sale, make a list of the things you genuinely need and stick to it, and also never, ever buy something that doesn’t look great on you just because it’s cheap. It will end up sitting in the back of your closet, and then you’ll end up throwing it away.

Accessories make or break the outfit

The crowning glory of your outfit – accessories. A pair of big statement earrings can take the most boring of dresses and turn it glamorous, and a silk scarf will make any blouse look ten times more sophisticated. Accessories are the key, they are the secret, they are just the thing you need to style up your wardrobe and make it look polished. They will make everything you wear look put-together and intentional, so invest in belts, scarves, jewelry, bags, and shoes. And again, pick only the accessories you fall in love with rather than stocking up on a bunch of cheap, plastic bracelets just because they were on sale.

Makeup details

What could be more stylish than a signature lipstick? Think of makeup as art on your face, or if that sounds too dramatic, think of it as yet another accessory. It can seriously improve your fashion game if you coordinate the colors of your clothes with your makeup.

To explore your style, you must be ready to get out of your comfort zone. Don’t stick to things that are safe, go for something you always wanted to try, something that enchants you and makes you feel truly inspired. Fashion needs to be enjoyed, otherwise it loses its point. So, explore, get creative, and have fun!
